Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most common forms of cosmetic dentistry that can take place in your dentist’s office. At Camelback Family Dental Care we provide a full range of service that can help you feeling your best with the glowing smile that you deserve.

What is Teeth Whitening?

This is a process that is meant to help lighten stains or discoloration to make your teeth look more white and crisper than before. This is really just mean to improve your smile cosmetically overall and doesn’t generally do anything for the health of your teeth. Usually it can take more than one tooth whitening procedure to get the level of whiteness that you are looking for from the process, and it will need to be maintained regularly to keep them shining bright.

What Does it Do?

The overall process of teeth whitening involves the topmost layer of the tooth, called enamel. The natural tooth color is actually just light reflection over the enamel of the tooth and the dentin that resides beneath the enamel. If you have a thinner layer of enamel on your teeth then you’re more likely to be able to see the dentin and have discoloration.

Coatings form over the enamel and end up carrying the stains that you see on your teeth. These stains can easily persist if you regularly smoke tobacco, drink liquids like coffee or coke, or even if you just don’t brush your teeth often enough.

Just going through the process of aging can discolor your teeth naturally.

Intrinsic stains are also a possibility when it comes to your teeth, which are stains inside the teeth. These happen if a child uses too much fluoride as a kid and change the color as their teeth develop.

Types of Teeth Whitening

There are two fairly common types of teeth whitening:

  • Vital Whitening: This is when a gel made with hydrogen peroxide is used on the teeth and then a special light is used to whiten the teeth overall.
  • Non-Vital Whitening: Whitening agents and fillers are used to help change the color of the tooth.
